Established in 1954, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) & Safdarjung Hospital is one of the largest and most prestigious medical institutions in India, operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

The institution is committed to providing tertiary level healthcare services to all sections of society, medical education of the highest standard, and fostering an environment of innovation through cutting-edge research.

Spread over 60 acres in the heart of Delhi, our campus integrates a 1500-bed hospital, medical college, nursing college, and numerous specialty centers. We serve as a referral center for complex cases from across North India and are recognized for our expertise in trauma care, cardiology, neurosciences, and organ transplantation.

Our Journey

1954

Safdarjung Hospital established as a 300-bed facility to serve the growing population of post-independence Delhi.

1962

Upgraded to a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Delhi. Began MBBS program with 50 students annually.

1974

Renamed Vardhman Mahavir Medical College in honor of Lord Mahavir. Postgraduate programs introduced.

1998

Recognized as a "Centre of Excellence" in Trauma Care by Government of India. Expanded to 1000 beds.

2010

NAAC accreditation with 'A' grade. Commissioned advanced cardiac catheterization lab and neurosurgery suites.

2020

Designated as a COVID-19 tertiary care center. Served over 15,000 patients during the pandemic.

2023

Launched AI-based diagnostic center and robotic surgery program. Bed capacity increased to 1500.
